St Michael Archangel by Piero della Francesca

Considerations about angels before laying down to sleep

Define for me the angel
Dürer drew, sullen
In a greatcoat
Intimidated by geometry

Or Angelico's angel, calm
At the turning point of history
Sweeping to one silken knee
In the maiden's bedroom

Or Piero's, with dragon underfoot
Stained silver sword raised
Inevitably victorious.

Tell me the venture
These pure spirits purpose
O my philosopher.

Meanwhile, unsatisfied
An artist inquires:
Under the robes
Inside the armour
Is there a being, a body
Cool as eternity?

All definitions dance around the truth
Yet to be discovered.
While I wait I would ask -
Lie beside me, my angel.
